There are many techniques that knitters use to create thick needle socks. The first technique is to decrease. After decreasing, the stitches are visible, so you should join them on either side of the visible gap. You can join stitches by knitting or purling one more stitch, or by slipping and knitting the stitch before the decrease. You can do this in two ways: you can slip 1 stitch, then knit one stitch, and then pass it over the last knitted stitch.
The next step is to knit a swatch of the sock you wish to make. A swatch should be approximately 5x5 inches or seven cm in size. You should knit the swatch in the pattern you wish to use, such as stockinette stitch, 2x2 rib, or some other type of stitch. Once you have bound off your stitches, wash and block the swatch. The swatch will change after blocking.
Knitting thick needle socks require a tight stitch count. Knitting socks with a size 2 needle is too tight for most knitters. If you want to knit tight socks, choose a lighter-weight yarn and work with a smaller needle. However, you should avoid using a large needle for the first pair of socks. The reason for this is that the smaller needle will give you a firmer pair of socks and will wear better.
Continuing the heel flap is a bit more difficult. The heel flap is about two 1/2 inches long, or about 6 cm. Calculate the length of your heel flap by knitting as many rows as stitches on the needle. In an "L" shape, short rows and decreases will form a cap on the heel. To make sure you knit a good-fitting pair of socks, measure your foot at its widest point. Next, measure the distance from the knuckle to the heel and subtract five centimeters for the cuff.
One technique that is easy to learn is the Magic Loop. The Magic Loop method involves using a single circular needle of at least 40 inches in length. Using shorter cables creates more cable joins, which are more likely to break if you apply too much force to them. Fortunately, there is an online video course available to teach you how to knit socks using the Magic Loop technique. A video course is available for those who want to learn this method and knit thick socks quickly and easily.
